The 04.5/05 Kia Spectra shares its platform with the Elantra but didn't recieve its safety improvements. It was the first car that the IIHS has given the Poor rating to since the 01 Elantra. The 05 Ion was updated with a revised interior, including a new steering wheel. The steering wheel broke off of its column in the crash test, but the car was rated Acceptable overall, the third highest of the five ratings. Well, I definitely don't think it's the best in that segment or anything, but it was a pretty good little car. I wouldn't own one if it's going to kill me in an accident, though.

Doing poorly in one crash test doesn't mean that it will kill you in an accident. It is of note to mention that the Spectra didn't recieve a Poor rating for any subcategory; it got a low overall rating because it scored mediocrely in too many subcategories, not for doing very poorly in anything.
Okay, so it might not kill you, but where I would probably walk away from an accident with some bruises and scratches in the other cars, I'd have a broken bone with the Spectra.

I agree that it is a serious detriment.
Let's hope Kia improves the design quickly before their safety image is tarnished.
