Top-Selling Sports CarsMore than most vehicle classes, sports cars span a wide range — not only in price, but also in such attributes as performance, ride comfort, refinement and craftsmanship.
According to Automotive News, the top selling sports car in the United States in 2003 — by a wide margin — was the Ford Mustang (including the limited-production SVT Mustang Cobra) with 140,350 units sold. Nissan’s recently introduced 350Z came in second with sales of 36,728 units. Chevrolet sold 27,974 Corvettes during 2003, and though sales dropped sharply from the previous year, Mitsubishi moved nearly that many Eclipse coupes.
Acura’s RSX coupe took the No. 5 spot, followed by the Hyundai Tiburon, BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class, Ford Thunderbird and Mini Cooper S.
Why do these particular models appeal to shoppers? In which areas do they excel? What are their drawbacks? Let’s take a quick look at the best-selling sports cars, listed here in order of sales:
Why the hell are the Eclipse and the Thunderbird up there? Who wants an ill handling, comparatively slow coupe and an oddly stlyed retro car?

People who want a cheap nice looking vehicle, I think they're pretty reliable, and they also have the good warranty.

I have no idea. Maybe just people who were big fans of the first ones and now have enough money to waste on them.

Well, I guess the Tbird shoppers would be loyalists. But, my friends dad had two last gen Tbirds and has one 69 Cougar, but the thinks the retro one is crap. Hmm...I think an ex BSA troop leader here has a retro bird. SO its probably all old people.

Yeah, I still can't imagine the T-Bird selling 20k? (it doesn't even say the sales) at $50k a pop and most of them old people.

The Mustang sells and has always sold for more than its styling. The old ones were always inexpensive fast cars, and the new ones are inexpensive, fast cars that are actually very good in other aspects as well. It is very easy to see why it sells so well.
And the Miata doesn't sell well at all, they sold only 9,000 last year. The RX8 almost made this list though.

I kinda wondered that, but it did say "Acura’s RSX coupe took the No. 5 spot, followed by the Hyundai Tiburon, BMW Z4, Mercedes-Benz CLK-Class, Ford Thunderbird and Mini Cooper S." making the T-Bird number 9.

Mazda RX8 sold 23,000 or so, it should be on the list.

This list is 2003 though, the title is wrong.

Me neither, but I knew it was 03 when I was talking about it earlier, so I still think what I said.

I expect with the release of the 2005 Mustang, sales numbers will jump significantly. The possibility of 200,000+ units is not out of reach for the Mustang

I think the 05 is much more appealing than the previous version, and the pricing makes it a pretty decent value, in my opinion. If other people think this as well, then it should lure Mustang loyalists, as well as first time sports car buyers.

Exactly. The 05 has enough influences from the 67 fastback look to attract old Mustang fans, but not so much that it parodies itself, as Ford did with the T-Bird, Plus, it's still a cool looking sports car, and even the V6 is a decent performer, so anyone in the market for a RWD 2 door sports car will give it another look. The last Mustang wasn't a bad looking car, in my opinion, just also not a great looking one, either. The new one, however, has people who aren't Mustang fans noticing.
