Lutz announces Solstice Pricing

The Promise of Solstice

General Motors Vice Chairman Bob Lutz drives the Pontiac Solstice Roadster Concept vehicle on stage at the 2004 North American International Auto Show in Detroit

By Bob Lutz
GM Vice Chairman

Doing a great roadster for $35,000-$45,OOO is a feat mastered by several automobile companies. In fact, it's relatively routine. It's doing that desirable, high-content roadster for under $2O,OOO that challenges an automobile company.

That’s what we promised we would do with the Pontiac Solstice when we announced we would put it into production, and that’s what I’m officially announcing today, here on GM FastLane, for the first time.

When Solstice goes on sale this summer, it will, officially, be priced at $19,995 — and that includes the $575 destination charge. You heard it here first.

That’s not for a stripped down model, either. That sub-$20,000 price gets you 177 horsepower mated to a five-speed manual transmission, 18-inch wheels, 4-wheel disc brakes, glass rear window, and a CD-player as standard equipment.

So there you have it. A roadster inspired by the European classics of yesterday, styled very much like the concept car of a few years ago, priced under $20,000 as promised today. Solstice is a true driver’s car, and it will be in Pontiac showrooms this summer. We look forward to your reactions...

It's not that good looking in my opinion, but a convertible for under $20,000 is pretty good. The only other one priced like that I can think of off hand is a PT Cruiser convertible.

The Solstice is no mainstream car Kevin.

I kinda like it, but it's a little too bulbous, I'd rather have the Sky.

I think GM's going for a no-clone angle with these upcoming convertibles, but I really don't see many people taking a Solstice over a Sky. Styling alone is enough to make me want the Saturn.

The Sky's estimated price is $5,000 more.

Really? I assumed the Saturn would be in the "cheap" category too. I guess it's just going to be average priced.

From what I heard on C/D, the Solstice will start at $20,000 and the Sky at $25,000. And $25,000 is still an excellent price for such a vehicle, and the Sky may also come with more options.

Oh, I agree it's a good price, it's just more expensive than I thought it'd be. That prices it above the PT Cruiser, in the range of the Eclipse and MR2. I think it'll be a better car than either of those, but it's still higher than I'd assumed.

I really wish they were making a hardtop version of this car (or the Sky). For that price, it would be my next car if it had a fixed roof.

A hardtop version would undoubtedly be more expensive, anyway.

I'm not so sure about that. The new Boxster coupe is supposed to be cheaper than the roadster version. In fact, I can't think of a case where the convertable costs more than the coupe.

Coupes are almost always less-expensive, but I think thewizard was talking about a retractable hardtop.

Ah. No, I don't want a retractable hardtop, I want a fixed roof. I'm not really a convertable person. They're cool as a second car, but my daily driver must have a fixed roof.

Those retractable hardtops are good enough to serve as a fixed roof, you just have to leave it up.

True, but the weight gain and the extra costs, I'd just rather have a fixed roof.
