Struggling Japanese automaker Mitsubishi Motors Corp. is quietly seeking a buyer for its U.S. operations, implying the company intends to leave the world's biggest car market, the Asian Wall Street Journal reported Friday. Mitsubishi Motors' new president, Osamu Masuko, traveled to Detroit in January to begin talks with potential buyers during the North American International Auto Show, the business daily said, citing people familiar with the matter.
Masuko was accompanied by Yasushi Ando, head of Tokyo-based investment fund Phoenix Capital Co., which holds a 21.2 percent stake in Mitsubishi Motors, the sources were quoted as saying.
Masuko and Ando met privately with several industry executives, including representatives from U.S. private equity fund Ripplewood Holdings LLC, the paper said.
Ripplewood did not show much interest in Mitsubishi Motors' U.S. operations, the sources were quoted as saying.
The talks mainly focused on Mitsubishi Motors' assembly plant in Normal, Ill., and its North American sales unit in southern California, the paper said.

I'm sure Mitsubishi would be missed, they've brought us mediocre, but popular, vehicles like the Eclipse, and they've made a name for the sport compact segment with the Evo. I don't think many people will care their sedans are gone, but I know several people who own Endeavors, and they like them.

The Endeavor and Galant are very good, though rather unpopular vehicles. The Lancer isn't too bad either, and is soon up for a redesign that should greatly improve it. I'd be disappointed to see Mitsu disappear.

I hate the Galant's styling, both inside and out, but it's a very good car overall. I can't imagine Mitsubishi dissapearing, maybe someone will make up some contract that allows them to buy their NA operations, but keep operating as Mitsubishi.

I can't imagine them disappearing myself, but I also didn't imagine Plymouth, Olds, or even Daewoo disappearing either.

Of those, Oldsmobile was the only one that really surprised me. I rarely saw Plymouths on the road, so the announcement that they were being cut wasn't a shocker. Daewoo I would have not expected if I hadn't already known about their massive financial trouble, but since I did, it didn't surprise me either. Oldsmobile on the other hand, I thought of as another unnecessary GM division, but I wasn't expecting them to axe it.

Plymouth would actually be very useful for Chrysler to have right now. As Dodge goes sporty and Chrysler goes luxury, a nice mainstream volume brand would be nice for them to have.

At the time the brand seemed kindof pointless, but you're right, now it would be useful. However, they didn't think that far into the future.

I hope they bring it back. It would really let them take Chrysler and Dodge even farther on their separate ways without having to worry about mainstream vehicles.

Yep. That would be a good idea on their part, and new Plymouths would actually be worth owning.
