So I go out to my car about 30 minutes ago, fire it up to let it warm up, and then start brushing the foot or so of snow off. I get all of the snow off and scrape some of the ice, but decide to let the defroster soften it up. So I sit in the car to warm up and when I see the ice at the bottom of the windshield melting, I figure it should be soft enough that the wipers wouldn't be frozen. I hit the wiper switch and they don't move. Uh oh. I quick shut it off. Unfortunately, they don't just shut off, they keep trying until they get one full cycle. Then the passenger side wiper breaks free but the driver's doesn't. Uh oh! I go out and tug on the driver's wiper and sure enough, it was still frozen. I break it free with my hands, go back in and hit the wipers again hoping both will work. No good, driver's wiper does not move. As best I can tell, the linkage broke. The wiper will rotate freely if you move it with your hands. The car is supposed to have a circuit breaker that is supposed to kick in if the wipers get jammed up to save the motor, but apparently it doesn't work all that well. I don't know how I'm going to get it to the dealer to fix it with no driver's wiper in this weather. The road spray would blind me before I got more than 3 miles and the nearest dealership is at least 12 miles away (and on busy highways where I'll get owned by road spray).
Well, I guess I should just be grateful I didn't fry the motor. Those are expensive. Linkage should be a fairly cheap fix. Guess I'll have to call the dealer tomorrow.
On your Mazda? That's not good. I hope it'll be a cheap fix. I had my wipers frozen in place earlier this month, they froze while I was in a store , but when I clicked the wipers (I too thought maybe it had melted enough) they tried to move and couldn't. However, I guess my circuit breaker, or whatever, works right, because it jiggled, then moved back down a couple centimeters to it's proper place. Anyway, sorry to hear you had wiper problems.
Had the breaker kicked, that's what they would have done, and they wouldn't have worked for 5 minutes and then all should have been well (according to the manual). But that's definately not what happened. But since the passenger's wiper still works, I know that I at least didn't fry the wiper motor.

Well, that should be under warranty then. If you don't think you can safely drive it there, ask the dealer to tow you.
I'm not sure if the warranty will cover it. If not, I doubt it could be that expensive. And I'm over an hour away from the dealer I bought the car at back home. Not sure how I'll be treated at the local dealer here or whether they'll give me a loaner or anything like that (I know the dealer I bought it at would). I'll have to give them a call tomorrow sometime.

For a car under a year old, ALL items on the car should be covered. I'd press that issue.

Yeah, I could always try the "well the circuit breaker should have tripped if the wipers were stuck" and try to get them to cover it because the breaker didn't do its job. But then I'm sure I'll get a "well why didn't you pry the wipers away from the windshield to be sure they weren't frozen".
I honestly can't believe this happened. I always check to make sure my wipers aren't frozen when I'm clearing the snow off. This was the one time I didn't in 6 years and the stupid things break. Serves me right, I guess.

Perhaps, but it still shouldn't matter. Nothing would have broken if their circuit breaker was working properly.
Well, the other thing I'm hoping is that there is some sort of break-away design for the linkage and that nothing actually broke, but rather it just came unhooked and that the repair will be an easy and quick fix. Like they just need to snap something back together.

Called the service dept today. The guy said it sounds like the nut on the wiper arm came loose, which is a simple fix. And now that he said that, I'm inclined to think that as well. After the initial wipe when the driver's wiper didn't move, I pried the wiper loose and tried them again and it did swipe halfway but then stopped. This is some promising good news after a generally crappy week. If I had a place to work on the darn thing, I'd do it myself, but I guess I'm gonna bring it into the dealer tomorrow morning to get it fixed. I hope that it is just a loose nut and nothing broken. That would really make my week.
Speaking of broken wipers, mine decided to magically stop working today when I got in my car go drive home in the middle of a snow storm. End ended up being stranded sitting in the backseat of my car for 3 and 1/2 hours before I could get a ride. After that I'm really looking forward to seeing that Corolla go.

Do you know what caused it to stop? Was it just a blown fuse, or did they freeze up?
Took it into the dealer today. Wound up just being a nut on the wiper mount had spun loose like the guy on the phone had said. It took the guy more time to find a ratchet than to fix it. How embarassing. Had I known that was the problem and how simple it was to fix it, I would have just done it myself. When the guy said he thought it was a loose mounting bolt/nut, I thought it was something under the hood and I didn't want to start pulling underhood panels (wiper mechanism is hidden behind some plastic panels under the hood) out in a snowy parking lot for fear of dropping a screw or something and losing it. Didn't even need to do that, just pop a cap off the wiper from outside and tighten the nut. Doh! Well, now I know what to do if it ever happens again and the guys at the dealer didn't charge me anything for it so all is well again.

Well that's good! Free, and easy. It doesn't get much better than that.

The motor was fine but something poped out of place. Anyways it's fixed now, nothing big. It's looks like I have the Corolla sold now to. I got down payment on it yesterday and it looks like the guy is going to be taking it on Monday.

Hmm. That's odd. Did it get caught up on ice or heavy snow? I've had the wipers literally freeze to the windshield (while they were moving, even with defrost maxxed) during one of my trips to Iowa during a heavy snow storm. But it wasn't so bad, I wasn't the only car sitting on the shoulder of the interstate, and at least I wasn't in the ditch like half the others.
