No real surprises there, I think. Even if I wouldn't buy all of their options in their respective categories, I don't think they can be faulted for choosing some of the best cars out there.

As of Monday night, CR has pulled its recommendation of the Focus for doing poorly in the IIHS side crash test. It also pulled its recommendations of the Honda Element, Hyundai Elantra, Nissan Altima, Mitsu Outlander, Suzuki Vitara, and Mazda3. That would put the Toyota Corolla as their top-rated small sedan.

I think he was implying that the cars listed were feminine, or most of them anyway.

I know what he was suggesting, I was just waiting for him to say it directly.

I guess they were just assuming the car was safer than it was. I like the Focus and the Corolla, and I can see them recommending the Corolla (since it tested better) but I don't think many consumers are going to pay much attention to the difference in safety, since all of those small cars did rather poorly in that test.

The test leaves the Corolla and Civic as their only recommended compacts, the Corolla because it tested well and the Civic because it didn't test poorly. The Cobalt would be recommended, but they don't have reliability info, and it may have scored too low in their testing as well.

Where did the Civic fall in the testing, rating wise?

It wasn't tested because it will be completely replaced in the next six months.

Oh that's right. And I'm willing to bet that if they didn't put some fantastic safety features in it, they'll be putting a rush to add something special, in light of that test. As a result, I'm thinking the next Civic will be pretty safe.

But weren't some of the cars that they tested spec'ed without side airbags even though side airbags are available? While I can't blame them for testing what the carmakers send them, it's not terribly fair to pit a Corolla with side airbags against a 3 or Focus that have been optioned without and then say the Corolla is safer. That's like comparing a base Mustang to a 350Z and coming to the conclusion that the less powerful Mustang with skinny tires is a worse performer. No ****, Sherlock. Could have told you that before you went to the trouble of doing any kind of test at all.

They tested all the cars with the standard airbag setup (for most it was no side airbags, but the Forenza, Aerio, and Elantra had torso airbags standard, and the Spectra and New Beetle had torso and head airbags standard).
Then, if the manufacturers wanted, they could request an additional test of one with optional airbags, if they paid for it. GM paid for the Ion's and Cobalt's second tests, and Toyota paid for another Corolla test.

It's a fantastic vehicle, and it doesn't surprise me it would win, but I figured they'd recommend something more in the normal price range for common people.
