The rumor mill is quietly buzzing on this one - in response to "record-setting" high gasoline prices in the United States, is GM considering importing the smaller-than-Aveo Matiz for use on American roads? With Mercedes discussing plans on bringing its "Smart" brand to the U.S. market, it is not beyond the realm of possibility, and could end up giving GM the PR image boost it needs to counter its image of being the company with the big, bad, gas-guzzling SUVs and few small, efficient cars for city-dwellers.

The new Chevrolet Matiz will also have a choice of two engines - a 0.8 litre three-cylinder 52bhp unit and a 1.0 litre four-cylinder 66bhp unit - both complying with the Euro 4 emissions standard. Fuel consumption is around 15% lower than their predecessors. Both engines also benefit from developments that improve overall noise and engine isolation, such as a three-point torque axis/hydromount engine installation and all-new inlet and exhaust systems optimised for airflow and noise levels through the use of new materials. Low friction valve gear, with roller cam followers, also contributes to smoother, quieter running. These improvements, combined with an overall weight reduction from the use of high strength steels and a lowering of the drag coefficient (Cd) from 0.399 to 0.344, result in a significant cut in fuel consumption.

I feel they'd have more success with the current gen, the one that looks like it's smiling. More people will probably go for the "cute" look.
Also, they've got to work with the design until it can do very well in at least one crash test, and then heavily market that result. Otherwise people will consider it unsafe.

True. People already think that subcompacts are inherently dangerous, on image alone. They'd better build the thing like a tank, and publisize that heavily.

Possible, but I think it's unlikely. The Aveo seems to be selling (from the number of them I've seen), probably largely because it's so cheap, but at any rate, it seems to be working. This car is smaller than the Aveo, it says so in the article, and I don't see them shrinking the Aveo. They'd probably just leave it as a subcompact, and add it as a new model. What category they'll call it could be interesting. "Micro-compact" maybe.
