And I thought Ferrari was too stubborn for this...

Dream Assignment: Design students asked to develop ideas for future Ferrari models

MARANELLO, Italy -- Students at four of the world's best-known design schools have been given a dream assignment: develop ideas for future Ferrari models.

"It is the first time Ferrari has ever held such a competition," says Ferrari Deputy Managing Director Amedeo Felisa, who welcomes "wild innovations."

The four schools are Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif.; Tokyo Communication Arts in Tokyo; Coventry School of Art and Design in Coventry, England; and the European Institute of Design in Turin, Italy.

The designs must fulfill one requirement: "Each project must be immediately recognizable at a traffic light as a Ferrari, even if the prancing horse emblem isn't visible," Felisa says. "We are looking for different shapes, but they must still show the Ferrari soul."

Italian design house and contract coachbuilder Pininfarina welcomes the input. Pininfarina has styled nearly every production Ferrari built in the last 50 years.

"Over the years, we probably have built up walls to defend the Ferrari design tradition," says Lorenzo Ramaciotti, head of Pininfarina design. "It is up to the students to break down these walls."

Each school will submit five models. The Ferrari Styling Committee and Pininfarina senior management will evaluate the models to determine the top four.

The winners will be announced in July during the unveiling of the models at the Galleria Ferrari museum, near the company's headquarters.

The students responsible for the four winning models will get to work temporarily at either Ferrari's or Pininfarina's design studio.

Good idea. That way by the time that one or two of those students are wealthy, they'll want to buy a Ferrari because the design had part of their influence in it.

Uptight, rather have a big company design the cars than a bunch of students at an art school, get it? (not my thoughts, just probably what he was implying about Ferrari).

I think it's a neat idea as well.

I think several companies accept designs from art schools, but I'm not sure, and I'm not sure if they ever make it to concept form.

Peugeot used to have a design competion in which they would produce the winner as a concept car. Other than that, I'm not sure.

I don't think Peugeot did it more than once though, and it was only shown at Geneva or something, never produced.

Well, I can understand companies being more inclined to trust their designers than art students, but I think it's a neat idea.
