390 horse Camaro coming in 2006

390 horse Camaro coming in 2006 - Lutz said it himself!

Detroit - After 4 years of getting beat down by the Ford Mustang, GM announced the legendary Camaro nameplate would return for the 2007 model year. "We just need a competitor to the Mustang, the GTO isn't a pony car and never will be", says car guy Bob Lutz.

"The Camaro nameplate will return on a modified kappa platform, capable of handling up to 450 horsepower." There will be a base v6 version, most likely powered by the new 3900 V6 with around 260 horsepower. The mid level Z28 will be powered by a detuned version the LS2, with "around" 390 horsepower. Top models will be in the form of an SS version, coming later in 2007 as a 2008. "Right now we're not sure what engine will go into the SS version, but I'm thinking a detuned LS7", said Lutz himself.

Lutz provided the media with a rough sketch of what the Camaro may, or will, look like. "We wanted a design with heritage, and retro was the way to go", said Mr. Lutz. "The Mustang evokes so much passion amongst car guys, we want the Camaro to do the same".

Expect more later this week.

This was an April fools joke on GMI, just thought it was rather funny.

It's a lot easier to make a sketch than to actually put millions into bringing such a vehicle to production.

I'll believe it when I see it at dealer lots.

Well, whether that was real or not, it's not too far from what it probably will be, although I don't think they'd have a detuned LS7 in it.  I REALLY, REALLY like the looks of it, except for the mirrors, just like in the previous ones.  But that's only minor.

To add to the list of doubts about the future Camaro, I seriously doubt the base model will have that much horsepower at a price that will compete.

I assume they'll try to keep pricing for a V8 version between the Mustang GT and the GTO, maybe $28K-$29K base with a V8, and $23K with a V6.

I would imagine you're probably right. Unless it has a stellar interior (unlikely) pricing the Camaro higher than the Mustang without sufficient feature content would only ensure its doom. Again.

Not necessarily. There are enough GM/Camaro fans, or people who just don't like the look of the Mustang for it to get by, even without doing anything much better than the Mustang.

Perhaps, but I wouldn't imagine it outselling the Mustang.

Should it have to, to be considered a success?

No, I wouldn't say that, but I would at least hope it would be competitive.

You say that but look at the new cars that have came out of GM, (GTO, Malibu is okay I assume, Solstice, G6 isn't terrible, Cobalt) they all have relatively good interiors.

I meant that too. Those interiors, well, the GTO and Malibu, and maybe the Cobalt are pretty good, just like you said, but they're not stellar. By stellar I meant exceptionally good, and that really isn't likely at all, especially not for the price point they're likely to be aiming for.

The GTO doesn't count, it's an example of what their Australian division could build five years ago, not what GMNA is about to do now.

In interiors, I'd say the Cobalt is excellent for its class, the Malibu and SportVans are average, maybe a bit above, but the G6 is subpar and the Solstice looks very "old-GM".

The GTO is very attractive I think, but you're right. The Malibu is of decent quality, much better than the last Malibu, but not very attractive. The "sportvans" look pretty decent, but not exceptional. I think Kevin just misunderstood what I meant when I said "stellar" interior.

I think so too.

At least that doesn't happen much, though, right?

Kevin understands everything perfectly, he just covers it up well.
