Backfires, Car and Driver April 2005- (on Mustang GT vs. GTO)
The GTO has equal or better scores in the following areas: Vehicle, Powertrain, and Chassis. It also scored higher in the fun-to-drive category. However, you picked the Mustang as the winner because it got a lopsided score in the "gotta-have-it factor." Your article reminds me of my first wife. She was terrible at cooking, cleaning, and lovemaking. But I chose her because she was a blonde.

Call me crazy, but why would I "gotta have" a muscle car that loses in almost every performance category to the car it's competing against?

Take your aunt Clara's glasses off, and see the GTO for what it really is: not a bloated Cavalier but a poor man's 550 Maranello. (Looks a little better now, doesn't it?)

The GTO has bland styling? Aren't the words like "grown up" or "adult" more appropriate? There are loads of fanc sports cars with wings and cladding that are guaranteed to make any mature adult feel a little silly behind the wheel. Pontiac finally makes something a 50-year-old enthusiast can drive, and people cry about banal styling. Amazing. Want to pretend your Batman? Go buy a Corvette. I love performance but don't want a car that says, "Hey, everybody, look at me, I'm a race-car driver!" Or, you guessed it, "I'm having a midlife crisis!" Can I get mine without the scoops or spoiler? I'm not 19 anymore.

How many more times do GTO fans have to have this explained to them? They're just bellyaching because C/D chose the car that they didn't.
The two biggest faults in the GTO did not include styling. C/D hated the shifter, and the car was far more expensive than the Mustang. That's not even getting into the Gotta Have It, which I know I've explained a good half-dozen times already.

Agreed, but you see, the GM brain implant doesn't allow for these types of rational thoughts in unbiased comparisons.

Actually, without analysis, it does look pretty bad for C/D. You really have to look into the issue, otherwise it does very simply look like C/D exploited the GTHI to make the Mustang win, for whatever reason.

I didn't say I necessarily agreed with the results, I just wanted to somehow make a post about a GM brain implant.
But it is VERY odd for a car to be 6 points behind, which the other car scored the same or better in most categories, and then be boosted ONE POINT ahead by a seven point "Gotta Have It" score. By reading the article I do believe that they're outcome was legit, but not by the scoring.

The GTO is probably a better car overall than the Mustang, but it's more expensive, and not as attractive. In a comparsion, I still would think that the GTO could win. I would choose a Mustang on the price difference alone, and I know nothing about the shifter on the GTO, so I'm not qualified to say whether I think they were right or not, but it does seem like the scoring is a little odd.

The GTHI is almost certainly an average. I don't think they could have messed with the numbers that much.
