Hummer H3 to start under $30,000

GM Prices HUMMER H3 from $29,500

The newest HUMMER to join GM's constellation of trucks and SUVs will be the $29,500 H3, due in dealerships in mid-May. GM announced pricing for the new ute last week as it kicked off an ad campaign centered around the NFL Draft and started showing a new ad during the ESPN coverage of the draft. When the H3 arrives in showrooms, it will sport full-time electronic four-wheel drive, OnStar, and a five-speed manual transmission standard. Two packages will offer 33-inch tires and a locking rear differential, or luxury amenities like leather trim. A four-speed automatic, sunroof, XM and a CD changer will also be offered. "The H3 will appeal to a slightly younger and more diverse group of customers with a base price starting at $29,500 and a size that puts it in the heart of the mid-size utility segment," said Susan Docherty, head of the HUMMER brand. "Though more approachable, the H3 is a serious off-road machine, just like its siblings the H1 and H2."

Courtesy of a GM vehicle display while I was in Atlanta, I now have a large poster of the H3. It's ugly, but the features look pretty decent, according to the brochure.

Where'd all this GM stuff come from in Atlanta?

That's not what it sounded like from his posts, but it's possible.

It wasn't from a dealer. GM sent some people down from Michigan and had a mini-car show at the US FIRST robotics competition. It was really interesting.

What did their cars have to do with robotics?

General Motors sponsors a few teams. One of those teams is solely GM funded, they have one of those large semi-style quad cab commercial trucks with a big built in trailer thing. I didn't get a picture of it, but it's an impressive vehicle for a high school aged robotics group to have solely for their use.

So GM handed out unrelated brochures there, or did they actually try to tie in their products with the event?

They didn't try to tie in their products with the event at all, they were just something to look at I guess. They had a Corvette, a Cobalt SS, the SEMA Saturn VUE, an 800+ hp Camaro, a Buick LaCrosse, a Hummer H2 and H2 SUT, a NASCAR race car with half the body cladding cut away so you could see the innards, a stand alone display of the SB2 V8 engine, and a weird car with a big engine sticking through the hood. As soon as I get the pictures worked up and shrunk down, I'll post some of them.

That should be nice.

Does your job involve robotics, or did you just happen to find this event?

I was assisting FIRST with the event by leading around some VIPs from sponsoring companies, and I visited the GM booth during some free time. It was a pretty big deal, there were around 20,000 high school students involved, and total attendance was somewhere around 50,000-60,000. It's a fantastic program, but I don't know if you've heard of it or not.

I don't think I've heard of it. What is it?

It stands for For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. It's an international program founded by Segway inventor Dean Kamen that gets high school students involved in building robots, community support, and partnerships with engineers. It's a great program, but it's expensive. The average team will spend around $100,000 for one season. Our town has a team that used to be funded by Baxter International, but is now funded solely on community support. If you want to read about it, you can see it at www.usfirst.org

I hope the robots work right, though, unlike the segway falling over when the battery is low.

What type of VIPs?

Ford built a robot like Honda's.  I imagine it was like Honda's I haven't really heard much about it, but it interacted and talked and everything.  It was at the KC Show.

That's a "duh" situation. The motors can't be expected to properly compensate for the balance of a person, no matter how well the gyros work, unless they have enough battery power to carefully control the motor output. People whining about the Segway falling over when the battery is low should be slapped.

CEO of Boston Scientific, Dean of Boston University, Head of Engineering from Hyundai Heavy Industries, South Korea, Senior Vice President of Rolls Royce, President of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, etc. etc. There were many there, that's just a few that I can remember.

It's still kind of funny, 'beep, beep, low battery' *thunk*
