2007 Lincoln Aviator

2007 Lincoln Aviator

Ford Motor Co.'s Lincoln division is phasing out its truck-based Aviator sport utility vehicle in favor of a new car-based crossover model that will use the same name when it is introduced in about 18 months as a 2007 model.

Consumers were given a sneak preview of the vehicle in concept form at last year's Detroit auto show. Ford engineers have since been testing early prototypes of the production model, which won't change dramatically from the concept.

Lincoln will aim the new Aviator at the Lexus RX 330, Cadillac SRX and other premium car-based utility vehicles.

Both the '07 Aviator and a companion model for Ford will share a front-/all-wheel-drive chassis derived from the Mazda6. The new vehicles are expected to be powered by twin-cam V-6 engines.

It looks like a Toyota, especially the front. Look at the emblem.

The front does looks like Toyota, but the body looks like an old minivan. And if you'll notice, it is a minivan. I don't see how that's going to compete with the RX330 or SRX. People buy those because they want a luxury SUV that still has the comfortable ride of a car. If they wanted a minivan, that's what they'd buy.

It's a test mule, the body is a Mazda MPV.

The front fascia is probably going to be what the Lincoln looks like, probably minus the MPV grille. But any spy shot is worth mentioning, look at this one:

Well, it'll be different then. It certainly doesn't look very Lincoln-ish.

What's the Aviator going to be based on? Car based? Truck based? New platform or something Ford is already using?

It says it right there in the post. "Both the '07 Aviator and a companion model for Ford will share a front-/all-wheel-drive chassis derived from the Mazda6.
