Ah, even if it is a little quicker, I now think I'd rather have the 3 overall.
Tests on the 3s range between 7.5 and 8 seconds to 60, but all of those tests were done on loaded hatchbacks, which are a good 100+ lbs heavier than the sedans. I'd wager my relatively stripped sedan is nearly 200 lbs lighter than the car C&D tested.

Good point. When you say stripped, what do you mean, what opptions did you go with?

The only thing on it that doesn't come standard is the "Sport Package", which consists of the 17" wheels and ground effects, which adds some weight over a completely stripped sedan but not as much as if I had it fully loaded. No sunroof, no ABS, no side airbags, no CD changer, etc...

Well, I wouldn't be willing to give up things like side airbags (if I could afford it) and ABS just to go a little faster. Very important safety features which I value highly. And now that I've had more than one car with a moonroof, I'd have to have that too. I'm not saying that's what you did, if you did I don't understand you at all , but if you didn't, then you might as well take advantage of knowing your car is a little quicker.

Well, I don't care much about ABS. I've never had a vehicle that had the feature. I raced motorcycles for several years before I ever got in a car, I learned a thing or two about threshold braking on lower traction surfaces (dirt, specifically). I doubt I'd ever pay extra for it unless it came packaged with stuff I absolutely could not live without. Obviously, if it's standard equipment I'm not going to complain, but I'm not willing to fork over several hundred extra dollars for it. Basically, with the budget I had, I could swing a well equipped base model that had the safety package or a faster but slightly less equipped higher end model. Performance won out in the end. So ultimately, it wasn't a matter of I could have gotten those things but didn't because I wanted my car to be lighter, the only way I could get them would have been to step down to a slower base model.
Also keep in mind that my previous car only had seatbelts as far as safety equipment goes and had no power accessories at all, so in comparison, this "stripped" Mazda is really rolling in luxury and safety for me with its dual front airbags, cruise control and power windows and locks with remote.
Ah, well I see where you're coming from there. I personally, now that I've had some vehicles with ABS, would not buy one without it. It really helps, even on dry surfaces, at getting your vehicle stopped in less time/distance.
This will be my first vehcile that I've owned to have ABS. It's not a feature I'd go out of my way to have but ABS with "EBFD" (wow thats like half the alphabet) is standard equipment for any 2.3L sedan in Canada.

That's good. I think you'll find that you like it. I never considered it important until I actually had it. I don't have electronic brake force distribution, but that's an added benefit as well.
