Geneva: 2006 B-Class

2006 Mercedes-Benz B-Class

A lot has happened in the two months since the Vision B Sports Tourer concept was unveiled at the Detroit show (see our Detroit show coverage). Mainly, Mercedes-Benz has recently decided to delay the U.S. introduction of the production version of its premium minivan/people mover-called the B-class--until at least 2007 due to the weak euro and other cost concerns. Some U.S. Mercedes dealers have expressed frank relief, because their plates are full this year and next dealing with the new CLS four-door coupe, the second-generation M-class, and the next S-class, and many of them wonder if the B-class is appropriate for the U.S. market in the first place, a concern we share. Can anyone say "dilution of brand value"?

Nevertheless, the A-class-based, front-wheel-drive production B-class debuts at Geneva and goes on sale in Europe this summer. There's no denying that it's a very clever packaging job. Arranging the engine and transmission partly beneath the passenger cell opens up vast quantities of interior space and affords greater safety, as the engine slides underneath the cabin in the event of a severe frontal collision. Multiple combinations of seat folding, tumbling, and removal make for a versatile and roomy cabin, but the exterior is compact enough for crowded European cities. Six gasoline and diesel engines are offered.

The taillights look like they were taken from a Volvo, but it's a rather attractive vehicle on the outside. The interior on the other hand, doesn't impress me. It looks more utlitarian than the exterior would suggest. I know it'll have all the features and toys, it's a matter of styling in this case, not content.

This could very well lead to the downfall of Mercedes. Not a very smart idea to have a hatchback with the Mercedes name, period.

EDIT: fixed names, im a retard

Why would that be? I'd expect this car to be very popular in Europe, where people like hatchbacks and would like an alternative to a decontended 320i. And it certainly won't lead to any "downfall" of the brand.

When you think Mercedes, you certainly dont think hatchback, you think luxury car. This is no luxury car. And by downfall i meant the Mercedes namesake as far a respect goes. Kinda like how the Charger name was tarnished with it being slapped onto a family sedan, to relate it to soething going on here. (BTW, didn't mean to get of topic with that whole Charger thing, this is a mercedes thread)

EDIT: wow am i retarded, I thought it initially was a BMW But the same rings true about it.

lmao, jeez SOAD.

I agree with you too.  And don't worry about getting off topic, it doesn't matter what we're talking about, a lot of our threads get off topic.

lmfao

And on second thought, (to SOAD) Mercedes has had a vehicle in this segment for quite a while, not necessarily the same style or anything, but the had that crappy (imo) little hatchback Kompressor C-series or whatever.

That's a hatch, but not a wagon. I don't see the B-Class being bad for Mercedes, they've had E-Class wagons and such, I don't see why an attractive wagon with it's own title would be a problem.

And it's really not cold here, it was colder in St. Louis (it snowed, but the pool was indoors, so I didn't care ), but according to the thermometer, it's 38 outside.

It's less of it being a wagon, and more of it being a cheap (price-wise) Mercedes.

I don't know how cold it is now, but that was probably our high for today.

Well, I can see the price issue. Mercedes is a full-range brand in Europe, but it's high end here, and I think they'd be better off staying in that segment, if they want to continue to sell their high end models on prestige (since that's basically their biggest selling point over the competition anymore). And with their profits in the toilet right now, they're probably thinking a more mainstream model might sell well and boost profits, but I think it might hurt them in the long run more than it helps them in the short.
