2007 Mini Cooper: Info and pics

The next MINI has already been designed, complete with a new interior and a new Clubman Estate version. We have all the details and exclusive undisguised pictures.

It's all good news from MINI, with an extended lineup that includes a new Clubman Estate variant that uses a "barn-door" style door on one side only to give easier access to the enlarged rear, as well as double doors at the back instead of the current liftback "fifth door".

At the same time the next generation model, which is expected to be unveiled at the Geneva Show in March 2007, gets some changes to the front end, including a more conventional bonnet to replace the current "clamshell" item, allowing the designers to give a more upright grille in keeping with the original Austin Mini's.

And, Auto Express reports, there are expected to be sporty models with a twin headlamp layout. Boot space is expected to be on a par with cars such as the Ford Focus and VW Golf.

And in addition to the new styling, expect a new range of engines as BMW switches sourcing from its joint-venture plant in Mexico to engines of its own design - plus a Toyota diesel.

Power outputs are not expected to change much.

However, biggest changes have come about inside the car.

Firstly, the dashboard will be thicker and wider, with inserts variang from real wood to plastic or body-coloured metal, with air vents included at the ends as well as in the middle.

The central speedo will remain, but will be much larger so it can incorporate a head-up display for the radio and trip computer.

As in the current model, it will also have a satellite navigatio screen where this is optioned.

However, it's the centre console that comes in for the biggest redesign.

It's now integrated into the dashboard, and has heater/aircon dials with a digital read-out.

The familiar toggle siwtches remain, but on a new panel, and there's also a DVD player which reads MP3s.

A 6-speed gearbox is likely to be included on the Cooper as well as the Cooper S.

It also looks as if a version of BMW's controversial iDrive system might be installed, plus a "sport" facility to modify suspension, steering and throttle tfor faster driving responses.

More stowage areas, better rear legroom and a bigger boot complete the picture.

OMG OMG!! THE HORROR!!

I don't see much difference.  It's noticeable but barely, a kind of reshaped front and boxier rear, and the interior's layout is basically the same.

I sure hope that the Mini doesn't get iDrive.

Haha... Thank you. I didn't feel like doing anything more in depth right now.

That's fine, I'm going offline for about half an hour, so I can't read anything more in-depth right now.

Good deal, it'll give me a few minutes to get somewhat caught up, but then I imagine I'll be offline for a while.

Haha... It might be, I just manage to have very little free time. So I make the most out of what I have, at least when it comes to the internet.

I think they're a cool looking little car, but the interior is too strange for me, and I would never feel safe driving something that small, no matter how well they build it.

I like driving small cars, and yes the interior is odd, I don't like the center mounted speedo.

If you don't feel terrified driving a Metro, then I can see how you'd be fine in a Mini.
