Good question. Everyone should have at least basic virus software, and I've never heard of a virus protection program that won't go ahead and clean out viruses.

Especially considering that some of the software is free (I use the free version of AVG).

Really? I used to use InoculateIT, back in the day when it was free, and am now using eTrust, the pay-for version of the old InoculateIT. How well does your free software work? It might be worth a try, even if it would only save me 20 bucks a year.

I've never had a virus, so I wouldn't know. Seems okay.
No programs work right...internet explorer randomly closes, along with real player, windows media, the scanner, and the virus protection wont work at all.

FIU, sounds like you've got a major problem. I'd recommend hiring a computer professional to come out and work on your computer, they charge less than $100.

I have Norton, but it never does anything like that.

Not especially major. It's all software glitches. The best way to fix it is to save the important files you'll need, scan them for viruses on a different computer, and then reformat and reload the infected computer. The reason computer "professionals" make such a decent living is most people don't know how to handle situations which are generally easy to fix. I can almost garantee you that if you take it to a computer professional, they'll do EXACTLY what I just told you, except they won't back up any files for you.

When my dad gets time, he's gonna wipe both computers and reinstall everything along with some better antivirus, adware, and spyware stuff.

You do realize he's like 13 or 14 right? And if it were me my dad wouldn't want me to be wiping out things and trying to reinstall them.
