I didn't realize that about curtain airbags on the Jetta. Interesting points.

VW was one of the first curtain-airbag manufacturers, and they brought them in across their entire lineup very quickly.

Smart move, but it didn't seem to help their sales much.

Being the first in 1999 isn't really going to help them too much by 2005, now that everyone else has adopted the feature, and they've moved away in price from any other compacts except maybe the Subaru Impreza, which at least has all-wheel-drive and agile handling.

I wonder how much longer Volkswagen can survive with their current attitude of normal vehicles at high prices.

The future is not bright for their US future if they screw up the new Passat's pricing as badly as they did the Jetta's (and I am fully confident that they will). I wouldn't be entirely surprised to see them deciding to pull out of the US market in the next ten years.

I agree, no matter how unfortunate it is. The high Euro/low dollar isn't helping them out any, either.

It isn't killing BMW or Mercedes. Or Audi, for that matter.

All three are generally more expensive than their non-German competitors, but in that realm, it's not as big of a deal as in the mainstream realm. And Mercedes isn't doing too hot right now at all.

The highest-volume Audi model starts at $27,000, well below a fully-equipped Jetta or even current Passat.

Well, in that case, VW is just suicidal.

Either that, or Audi prices will also soar.

Or, maybe the cost of the VWs will send more buyers to the only-a-bit-more Audi equivalent. Though they can't afford to mess with strategies like that in their current situation.

I suppose that's a possibility, but you're right, they really can't be doing that.
